The annual Met Gala is taking place today (Monday 1 May) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The theme was unveiled in September last year as “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” and promises to “examine the life” of the late designer’s fashion legacy.
Attendees have been informed that the “most authentic approach” would be for attendees “to wear an archival look from one of the labels Lagerfeld led”.
They can also opt for “modern-day” looks by Chanel or Fendi, two brands where Lagerfeld once held the role as creative director. For the third option, guests are recommended to “find a Choupette,” the name of the designer’s beloved Birman cat, and “dress à la Lagerfeld”.

The decision to feature Lagerfeld as this year’s theme has raised eyebrows, with many highlighting the many controversial remarks the late designer made during his lifetime. He has been accused of bigotry with Jameela Jamil among those who condemned the choice.
From his fatphobic and body-shaming comments (He claimed in a 2009 interview that 2no one wants to see” plus-size models, and then called Adele “a little too fat” which he later apologised for) to his controversial opinions about the MeToo Movement, migrants and LGBTQ rights, these are some of Lagerfeld’s most controversial moments.
“This man… was indeed, supremely talented, but used his platform in such a distinctly hateful way, mostly towards women, so repeatedly and up until the last years of his life, showing no remorse, offering no atonement, no apology, no help to groups he attacked… there was no explanation for his cruel outbursts,” Jamil wrote.
The list of rumoured arrivals to this year’s event include:
Jimin (BTS)
Lady Gaga
Vanessa Hudgens
Rita Ora
Maude Apatow
Camila Morrone
Amber Valletta
Kim Petras
Ice spice
Idris Elba
Nicole Kidman
Lizzo
