Likely one of the most provocative shows during New York Fashion Week was Black Tape Project’s packed event, featuring models wearing electrical tape as bikinis. In other words, they walked the runway in nothing but fancy duct tape.

People have responded with mixed reactions to the controversial designs. Many supported the designer as being innovative and authentic, while others were repulsed by the idea that the fashion tape covered only a few key areas of the models’ bodies. Some critics are now calling it “sex tape” because of the unconventional, racy attire.

While it’s understandable why critics feel some discomfort with these unorthodox designs, Black Tape Project currently boasts more than 700,000 followers on Instagram with a decent engagement rate. While being focused on creating a new categorisation of body art, the designer, Joel Alvarez, appears to open a new genre of fashion. Other similar designers, like Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, who created the Coperni brand, where model, Bella Hadid wore a liquid fiber dress during the Spring/Summer 2023 show are also opening new pathways in fashion.

Don’t underestimate the power of this new trend. It’s likely that more designers will continue the movement and possibly help introduce body art as a more modernised style.
